Here are a few frequently asked questions about solar panels answered.

Do solar panels work at night or in the dark?

In a word, no, solar panels do not work effectively at night. But with the battery installed with your solar panels, this can store the energy collected throughout the day, meaning even when it’s dark you can use green energy and be off-grid.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes, solar panels do. Normal daylight is usually sufficient enough for the panels to generate enough DC energy, which is then turned into AC energy. Therefore, illustrating solar panels do not need intense, bright sunlight. However, it is without saying that your solar panels are likely to generate a lot more energy on clear, less cloudy days.

Do solar panels work in the winter?

Yes, solar panels don’t need heat from the sun to generate energy. Solar panels convert the sun’s light energy (solar irradiance) into DC energy, which is then converted into AC energy, which is the energy household use as electricity. Therefore winter daylight is enough to power your home.

How do solar panels work with batteries?

Once the solar panels have generated electricity they can be used once to convert it into AC energy and can be used throughout your home. If you don’t want to use the energy at that time you can put it into the solar battery.

If the battery becomes full you can use this additional energy to heat another part of your household, such as charging your car or heating your hot water. If not, the surplus energy is sent to the grid.

How do solar panels work off grid?

Off-grid means your premises are disconnected from the national grid, meaning your solar panels are providing you with the needed electricity and you don’t need to outsource. To be fully off-grid, you need a battery connected to your solar panels to store the additional energy you’ll need later in the day.

Are solar panels efficient?

This is a difficult question, as solar panel conditions will never be perfect or 100% efficient. This can be due to shading over the solar panels, weather conditions, and even the solar panels being dirty.

However, the solar panel industry is always advancing, especially now green energy is becoming more popular. Therefore, we can hopefully expect solar panels to be more effective in the future.
